From the Adventures of Luke Starkiller
Castle Fine Art is proud to present From the Adventures of Luke Starkiller, a world-exclusive collection of original art by the prestigious pencil artist, Robert Bailey. In this collection, Bailey has exquisitely illustrated scenes from 1977's 'Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope' and placed them alongside original script pages from the film.
The script featured in the collection originally belonged to English actor and mime artist, Anthony Daniels, best known for playing the loyal protocol droid C-3PO in the Star Wars saga. This follows Bailey's previous collection The Empire Strikes Back - Part Two, where he paired artwork and script pages from 'Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back' (1980)
A piece of film history
The authenticated fourth draft script was used during the production of 'A New Hope' and contains hand-annotated personal pencil markings and script revisions by Anthony Daniels, providing an insight into the film's complex production process. In January 2024, Harrison Ford's copy of the script sold at auction for over £10,000.
Daniels first appeared in the role of C-3PO in 1977 and is the only actor to appear in all Star Wars feature films to date.
His 145-page draft script, credited to Lucas, is dated January 1, 1976. The visibly worn title page has Daniels' name stamped on it and features the title "Star Wars". A second title page features the original title 'The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from the 'Journal of the Whills''. 'The Journal of the Whills' was originally conceived by Lucas as a plot device, whereby an immortal being - a Whill - watched and recorded the events of the film.
The script is bound between yellow card covers, with the front cover featuring an original triangular "The Star Wars" sticker. C-3PO's lines throughout the script are identified with attentive pencil markings and some have locations noted next to them. A torn page from an unidentified script is slipped between pages 113 and 114.
A creative force
Using a method called hatching, whereby the closely drawn parallel lines imply shade, tone and texture, Bailey's drawings take many hours to complete. Each image is purposely chosen to carefully complement the script page it accompanies, perfectly recreating that movie moment. As well as being hand-signed by the artist, each original drawing bears two Lucasfilm stamps. The red stamp signifies the copyright of Lucasfilm Ltd, and the blue stamp provides the authenticity of Bailey being one of very few Lucasfilm-endorsed artists.
Robert Bailey's incredibly detailed art came to the attention of George Lucas when he saw his paintings of military flight manoeuvres. George Lucas invited Bailey to work on Star Wars Visions, which saw 30 artists create their own interpretations of the beloved characters from the Star Wars series. So thrilled with Bailey's work, Lucas subsequently bought many of Bailey's drawings for himself and cast and crew members.
In this collection, Robert Bailey's drawings and pages from Anthony Daniels' script have been paired together, then mounted, framed and placed under museum-quality glass. The result is a collection of totally unique pieces, perfect for any Star Wars fan.
