Steve Winterburn | Spring 2025
Bronze sculptor Steve Winterburn delves further into the world of wildlife, capturing the spirit of the animals he sculpts with remarkable authenticity.
Wild inspiration
Set in the Yorkshire countryside, Steve Winterburn's foundry is surrounded by British wildlife. Inspired by the animals he saw, Winterburn set about immortalising them in bronze. Studying the native animals, the owl and the rabbit, the artist has gained a deep understanding of his subject, allowing him to capture their physical form as well as their spirit. Always preferring to study an animal in person before he recreates its likeness in bronze, Winterburn captures the energy of the creature in the expressive eyes of his sculptures.
Capturing motion
The artist has spent a lot of time diving with turtles throughout the years, observing their movements and experiencing their presence in their natural habitats. This experience has allowed him to precisely replicate the natural motion of this elegant creature.
Winterburn's patient dedication to his craft allows him to create sculptures that feel as though they may come to life at any moment. A breathtaking celebration of movement, form and the grace of nature, this captivating collection immortalises the beauty of the natural world.
Age-old techniques
At their family-run foundry, Steve Winterburn and his family handcraft each of their sculptures. Calling upon thousand-year-old techniques from foundrymen, they combine modern methodologies with time-honoured practices. Using the lost wax process, Winterburn pours molten metal into a mold formed around a wax model. Melting the wax away, a pristine bronze form is revealed.
The artist then adds a patina, which will develop and oxidise over time, giving each sculpture a unique finish. Throughout the years, Steve Winterburn has developed and experimented with his style, becoming an expert on both his medium and his subjects. With this experience under his belt, he now feels freer to focus on breathing life into his sculptures with finely detailed features, merging realism with a sense of movement.
