Lawrence Coulson | Summer 2025
Experimenting with bold colours and elements of surrealism, Lawrence Coulson brings a new dimension to his distinctive landscapes in his stunning Summer 2025 collection.
Using the initial impact of colour and atmosphere to draw us in, Lawrence Coulson then captures the viewer with the intense detail within each of his paintings. For this collection, the artist focused increasingly on the features in the foreground of the paintings - we see people, paths and yachts amongst others. Travelling to different locations for photography and referencing books in search of the perfect lighthouse or bay, Coulson builds his landscapes by combining these lifelike details with imagined scenes.
Coulson's collectors relish in this attention to detail. And whilst he strives for constant improvement and quality, he ensures that his works never become so refined that they no longer look like paintings. He hopes that viewers will identify with the figures he often centres in his work, placing themselves into the stunning scenery, seeing the place they want to see and writing themselves into the story.
New techniques
Coulson pushed his boundaries by investigating a new medium for this collection. Painting the originals on aluminium for the first time, he had to work through a number of challenges to understand how his paint and techniques would work on the metal. Comparing it to working on marble, the artist found that the smooth surface allowed the paint to move more freely than he was used to. Coulson lightly scraped off paint in areas to reveal the natural finish of the metal, glimmers of the aluminium subtly shining through on snow-capped mountains and blades of grass.
Showing remarkable creativity in his choice of tools, Coulson employed everything from toothpicks and credit cards to kitchen scourers and makeup brushes to add rich texture and intricate detail. He found he enjoyed relinquishing control and allowing the painting to come together organically. To capture the incredible intricacies and depth of Coulson's original paintings into the signed limited editions, they have been produced as flatbed textured giclées on boxed canvas.
