Veg Out at Pret

What feels like ages ago, Clive (Pret's CEO) started asking questions on his blog about veggie food. Fast forward a couple of years and we've just built our second Veggie Pret (a Pret that doesn't sell any meat).

There's one in Soho and one in Shoreditch - but that's not really the point - these two shops (and all the customer feedback) have helped our food team create a delicious menu of food that's appealing to everyone.

Our 'Not just for Veggies' recipes have travelled the world with our shops in Hong Kong, Paris and America all tempting more people to eat a little less meat. And for the summer we have a dedicated fridge in almost every UK Pret shop to highlight the choices available to everyone.

It's very encouraging - and quite surprising - that over half of our regular customers at our Veggie Pret shops are meat-eaters.

We think the key to getting more people to eat more vegetarian food is to simply make more tempting, varied and delicious vegetarian food (easier said than done). So, we've introduced new ingredients and new bold flavours into our shop kitchens, things like smashed beetroot, turmeric cauliflower, and sweet-potato falafel.

Throughout the summer we'll continue to introduce new recipes with our Chef's Specials - all of which will be veggie and vegan. We'd love to know what you think - have we hit the spot, or lost the plot?

Is it five-a-day? Should it be ten? No one knows for sure. What we do know, is that everyone can benefit from eating a little more veg (and probably a little less meat).

Carefully sourced ingredients are fundamental to Pret food. We're incredibly proud of the relationships we have with both our arable and meat farmers and are committed to higher farm animal welfare standards. However, we think that reducing meat consumption makes a lot of sense - it's arguably better for the planet, the animals, and for you.

We're going to continue developing delicious veggie and vegan recipes and carry on this conversation in our kitchens, in our shops and on our CEO's blog. Please do keep telling us what you think.
